Symphony of Soil!

Soil

Did you know that compost is ALIVE? We reached out to Sundiata Ehem-El, owner of Compost Community, and asked him to share his extensive knowledge of composting and its role in building fertile soil.

Compost, just like nutrient-rich soil, is a breathing and active organ made up of billions of different types of organisms that we call the Soil Food Web.  The soil food web comprises bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes.  The latter two organisms feed on the former two.  This is a natural occurrence that attracts larger predators, which in turn attract birds.  When you see birds digging around in the soil of your yard, know that they are part of the larger food web that is happening underground.  Compost is a housing complex for this soil food web, and when compost is added to your native soil, it helps build that web of life, promoting vegetable and fruit production in your garden or grow space.  Look at compost as the backbone of nutrient-dense food.  Without the recycling of organic matter back into the earth, we deplete our soils and grow inferior and unhealthy plants.  Composting and reintroducing the right microbiology into our soils are key to addressing our food, water, and climate problems.  Remember, Compost is LIFE!  It all starts with the soil.
